Common Questions

The Collections

Can you eat them?

While we admit some do look good enough to eat, please don’t! Happily though pure, filtered beeswax is considered food safe, making them the perfect celebration candle for the top of that special cake. Rumor has it, the Blackberries and Strawberries are the must have!

Do people really burn these candles, they're too nice?!

Absolutely, that is what they’re made for! Besides if you didn’t you wouldn’t have an excuse to come back for more! Seriously though, there’s few things better than a slow burning candle, akin to presenting that decadent cake and then relishing eating a slice along with everyone around you. It’s about experiencing and sharing the moment!

Do you intend to expand the Collections?

In short, yes! Between busy winter production runs and the spring and summer market season we’re always experimenting and trying new ideas. Our vision is to release at least one new collection a year that's original, unique and in sync with the seasons.

Where can I see your candles?

Wish to discover more in person? We stock limited ranges in selected retailers, please refer to Our Retailers page for the latest locations. And we regularly attend seasonal markets and fairs across Wellington including the Thorndon Fair, the Newtown Festival and CubaDupa. Stay tuned to our Instagram feed and stay up-to-date with our latest festival line-ups.

Craft and Materials

Where does your beeswax come from?

We’re lucky to source our beeswax right here in New Zealand. Our white beeswax comes from NZ Beeswax in Orari in the South Island, where the natural yellow colour is removed using an organic and sustainable process. Our lighter beeswax comes from Nature’s Buzz, a family owned honey producer in Dargaville who have been doing their thing for over 38 years. Good candles really do start with good ingredients!

Do you add colours and fragrances to your candles?

Some of our pieces are made from pure New Zealand beeswax with nothing else added at all. Where colour is called for, we use vegetable-based candle dyes sourced here in New Zealand. Any fragrances we use are phthalate free and specifically made for candle use. It’s all about adding just enough while still letting the beeswax do its thing.

What kind of wicks do you use?

The wick for each candle is carefully selected to suit its shape and size and give the best possible burn. Our wicks are cotton with a paper core and paper braid, helping them burn cleanly and consistently. And happily, they’re zinc and lead free too.

Absolutely! Sometimes the best ideas start with a simple conversation. Tell us a little about yourself, what you have in mind and why you think it could work with Kina and Co.

We can’t promise every idea will be the right fit, but we’re always happy to hear what creative people are dreaming up.

Candles and Wellbeing

How do I burn my candle safely?

Candles are made to be enjoyed, but an open flame always deserves a little care. Before lighting, remove any packaging and labels and trim the wick to around 6mm. Always place your candle securely on a stable, heatproof surface in a well ventilated room and keep it away from draughts, children, pets and anything flammable.

Never leave a candle burning unattended and aim to burn it for no longer than 3 to 4 hours at a time. When you’re finished, either use a snuffer or gently dip the wick into the wax pool and re-straighten with a metal dipper.  Never use water to extinguish a flame. Let everything cool completely before touching or moving.

How do I get the best from my candle?

A little candle care goes a long way! For most of our candles, give that first burn at least 60 minutes so the wax has time to melt evenly towards the edge and help prevent tunneling.

Keep the wick trimmed, the wax pool clear of matches or wick trimmings and, if things start wandering off centre, gently reposition the base of the wick while the wax is soft. If you’re burning a collection together, give each candle a little breathing room too. A few inches between them helps everything melt nice and evenly.

Why does my beeswax candle sometimes develop a dusty coating?

That’s called bloom, and happily it’s completely natural! Beeswax can develop a soft, dusty-looking coating over time, particularly when stored at cooler temperatures. It doesn’t affect the candle or how it burns.

For smooth candles, simply give it a gentle buff with a soft cloth to bring back that glorious shine. For more textured pieces such as our kina, a little gentle warmth from a hair dryer can help - just take care not to get the wax anywhere near melting point.

How should I store my candles?

When they’re not busy making a room look fabulous, keep your candles somewhere dark and away from unnecessary heat. Beeswax naturally changes a little with temperature and time, so a cool, dark spot will help keep them looking their best.

Shipping and Gifts

Do you do gift wrapping?

Every candle is carefully wrapped for its journey to you, with our focus firmly on keeping it safe while avoiding unnecessary packaging. We generally use layers of tissue paper along with recyclable card and paper protection inside the postage box.

Buying for someone special? Happily, we can also include a complimentary handwritten message on kraft card. Just pop the recipient’s name, your message and your own name into the cart and we’ll take care of the rest.

Where do you ship to and how much does shipping cost?

We currently ship throughout New Zealand, excluding the Chatham Islands. Standard shipping is $10 nationwide, with Great Barrier Island incurring extra charges. If you're shipping to Great Barrier Island we'll be in touch with a quote for additional shipping costs; in the event you do not accept these additional charges we will refund your order.
